P.P.Doctorjee keenly
felt the need for involvement of one-and-all, in Sangha work. He often
asserted that Sangha excluded, or kept out no one, including people who were
not traditionally Hindu, and including those who belonged to all strata of
the society. Thus, he was particular that senior leaders of the society from
all areas of activity should be invited to Sangha. They should be given all
information so that they see for themselves how important Sangha work is, and
he would actively seek their own involvement or at least, co-operation. Thus,
it was but natural that he wanted Shri Subhash Chandra Bose (also known as
“Netaji” or senior leader) to come to Sangha and possibly, to assume a senior
responsibility in Sangha work.
In those days, Netaji was the mayor of Kolkatta city. Many dignitaries were
waiting in line to see him, and P.P.Doctorjee had been given just
half-an-hour of Netaji’s time.
However, very soon into the meeting, Netaji instructed his secretary to
postpone indefinitely all of this other appointments. In fluent, idiomatic
Bangla, P.P.Doctorjee and Netaji conversed for hours on end. Netaji soon
sensed P.P.Doctorjee’s sharp intellect, extremely keen observations, and his
unique ability to synthesize complex social issues into a comprehensive,
logical solution, his profound experiences and pragmatic approach. Netaji
became an instant, doting admirer of P.P.Doctorjee. At the end of the
conversation, P.P.Doctorjee suggested that Netaji should “put his shoulder to
the wheel of social upliftment and Freedom Struggle through Sangha work.”
Unlike many politicians, Netaji was a man of great integrity and honesty. He
said: “P.P.Doctorjee, I agree with every word you have said. I too firmly believe
now, that in Sangha work alone, lies the seed of renaissance of our society
and our nation. Sangha will be the solid foundation to re-build Bharat. But,
I have gone too far into being a politician. To extricate myself from the
last several decades of my past, and to re-start as a Sangha worker,
honestly, will be very difficult for me. I won’t be able to do justice to it.
Therefore, please forgive me. But please note that though I am not coming to
Sangha, my heart is totally with you. I shall leave no stone unturned to do
my share, when and if you need it.”
