On a short vacation,
P.P.Doctorjee stayed in the luxurious home of one of his very affluent friends
Shri Nana Saheb Talatule. Shri Talatule was a marksman and an avid hunter.
His home was full of stuffed animals he had hunted; and in heavy winter
chill, everyone in his home used heavy rugs made from animal furs and skins.
Shri Talatule offered the rugs to
P.P.Doctorjee and his companion Swayamsevaks.
Even though that night was extremely cold and windy, P.P.Doctorjee pulled out
his old, worn “Kambal” (a handspun, thin rug), which he had brought along
from Nagpur, and used it instead of the lush rugs provided by his host. That
“Kambal” was nowhere warm enough for the bitterly cold night. So, the
Swayamsevaks said, “P.P.Doctorjee when our gracious host has provided us with
such excellent, comforter rugs, why are you still using old ‘Kambal?’ It is totally
insufficient for his freezing, chilly night!”
P.P.Doctorjee’s laughter and calm response echoes in our ears to this day. He
said, “Just because we are temporarily surrounded by articles of luxury, it
does not automatically mean that we have to succumb to their use. It is
better if we are happy and content with the simple things we can afford, for
our use everyday!”
