After visiting the Sangha Shiksha Varga (Officers’ Training Camp - “OTC”) of 1940
in Nagpur, when Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherji went to see the terminally ill
P.P.Doctorjee. But, Doctorjee himself got up, and came to the entryway door
of his home to welcome Dr. Mukherji.
Stunned, Dr. Mukherji blurted out, “What is this Doctorjee! A person who is
very sick must not come out of his bed, as you have done!”. P.P.Doctorjee
smiled and said, “All my sickness ran away – you see, it was scared of the
arrival of a great doctor!”
P.P.Doctorjee was in very serious condition, carrying a high fever at that
time. However, he sat up and quietly listened to the horrible accounts of
brutalities meted out to Hindus in Bengal as narrated by Dr. Mukherji. Shri
Guruji and other senior Sangha adhikaris were also present. All were openly
moved to tears when they heard the atrocious gang rapes of young Hindu widows
by relentless, cruel Muslim fanatics. The widows were kicked out as “unholy”
by stupid Hindus from their homes. With nowhere to go, they fell prey
helplessly to the Barbarian marauders. The butchery and slaying of Hindus
en-masse in Noakhali, and Tripura was the latest incident in a long sequence
of such incidents.
Describing all of these in very forceful, fluent words, Dr. Mukherji, who had
arrived from Bengal just then, said: “There is only one way for Hindus to
survive in Bengal. We must create a Hindu Raksha Dal (Hindu Defense League)
on an emergency basis. Over the long term, only Sangha can solve the problem.
But to meet today’s emergency needs, a military style cadre force must be
organized. Also, we must jump into the political arena and fight there as
well.”
All of our distraught eyes were now upon P.P.Doctorjee, who was calmly
listening all this time. Even though he was extremely sad, he spoke in a calm
voice: First, he expressed his deepest compassion for the Bengali Hindus.
Then he continued: “The Muslim led Bengal state Government, under Mr. Fazlul
Huq, as well as the British central rulers, will try their best to crush any
Hindu Defense League; especially since Hindus from the Azad Hindu Fouz
(Indian Independence Army), have almost reached Bengal from the East,
defeating the British. This Defense League will not survive.”
“Then, please tell us what we should do?” asked Dr. Mukherji. P.P.Doctorjee then placed his analysis of
the situation as follows:
“Really speaking, the hopelessly disorganized Hindu Society is the root cause
of all this evil. Many a times in our history, noble efforts were made to
attain sovereign freedom but they were all “causes lost” because of this
hopeless disarray of Hindus. If we fall for the “Emergency stop-gap” measures
due to the pressure of the present circumstances, we too will face disaster.
A “Defense League” style emotional uprising based on momentary hatred of a
community; will be doomed before its start; it is a wasted effort. This
league will not be able to protect our beleaguered Hindu Society. This is why
Sangha does not enter into current, day-to-day politics. It is working
throughout the length and breadth of Bharat to weave a network of patriotic citizens.
Such an organization alone will be able to squarely face the challenges of
today, as well as those of tomorrow.”
The honesty, truth and fundamentally sound logic inherent in P.P.Doctorjee’s
thoughts and words finally impressed Dr. Mukherji. This was the last meeting
of Dr. Mukherji with P.P.Doctorjee, who passed away in the next few days.
