Jailer Mr. Ford (see incident #122 also) saw that even though P.P.Doctorjee
was as much a prisoner as all others, people flocked around him, told him about
their problems and he gave them good advice. This was obvious from the happy
faces of the people who went to seek P.P.Doctorjee’s advice. One day, Mr.
Ford approached P.P.Doctorjee. He said: “Doctor, you know that as an
Irishman, I have decidedly sympathy for you and your fellow freedom fighters.
I sincerely wish to do my very best to help you, and I try to alleviate your
suffering from the British regulations. Yet, when I go out into Nagpur city,
everyone stares at me with eyes full of anger and hatred! They even had a
protest march against me once. Why is this happening?”
P.P.Doctorjee said: “Please don’t believe for a moment that our people hate
you personally. All of us, who know you, are very grateful for your friendly
attitude and humane treatment of those who are prisoners in your charge. But
the regime you work for is our foreign enemy. You are the representative of
the foreign aggressor, oppressor. Our opposition is to that foreign
aggressor, oppressor. It is not directed against you as an individual.”
Mr. Ford was satisfied.
