143.  Politics did not enter into P.P.Doctorjee’s friendships:

Mr. Dhawale and Mr. Balavir Harkare were two people whom P.P.Doctorjee knew personally, as they were his childhood cronies. They contested Nagpur Municipal elections. Hot arguments were exchanged between Mr. Dhawale and P.P.Doctorjee prior to the elections. One speaker, in the heat of election, accused Mr. Dhawale of being an agent of the city’s contractors. When Mr. Dhawale angrily protested, insisting upon the speaker to take his words back, P.P.Doctorjee supported the accuser, saying that he spoke the truth.

In the elections, Mr. Dhawale and Mr. Harkare got a thumping majority on their congress tickets, and were elected as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Nagpur city. This made many Hindutva supporters feel utterly defeated, dejected and angry. But P.P.Doctorjee remained cheerful. Very soon after the elections, P.P.Doctorjee invited both of them to his home for lunch. At the occasion, he warmly introduced them to others, saying that since both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, as his childhood friends, had ascended to their high offices, he felt that Nagpur City Corporation had become like a home to him.

This made both Mr. Dhawale and Mr. Harkare so happy that they remained his lifelong friends thereafter.
