After his return from Kolkatta (after his medical degree), P.P.Doctorjee
immersed himself in nation-building work. He once went to this Bengali
friend, advocate Jnana Ranjan Sen, who lived at Raipur, in Central Provinces.
His aim was to ask Mr. Sen to become a subscriber for the National Hindi
weekly called “Sankalpa”. This would have helped the financially struggling,
fledgeling weekly.
Upon listening to P.P.Doctorjee’s proposal Mr. Sen said: “Look I don’t
understand a word of Hindi. I read Bengali and English periodicals. Are they
not enough? Why should I a Bengali, subscribe to support a Hindi weekly?”
P.P.Doctorjee’s face became red; his voice grew hard. He said: “Mr. Sen you
have lived and prospered in Central Provinces, a Hindi speaking area. All
Bharateeya languages are equally important for mother Bharat. Your narrow
mindedness, as shown in your “Bengali versus Hindi” approach is utterly
detestable. If you are so proud of being a Bengali that you won’t support
efforts for Bharat’s freedom done by a Hindi language weekly, you are neither
a good Bengali nor are you a good Bharateeya. Give up this parochial, narrow
mindedness!”
Mr. Sen became a subscriber in the next five minutes.
