Once, on a camping trip in
a dense forest, Doctorjee and others were sleeping in tents, while a night
watchman was patrolling with a shotgun, (since the forest was full of dangerous
wild animals who often were known to attack the people passing through).
On the second night,
fatigue over-powered the night watchman. He sat at a huge rock, and was dozing
fitfully, leaving on his shotgun. Soon, he felt a friendly hand on his shoulder.
P.P.Doctorjee stood there, smiling. P.P.Doctorjee gently lead him to his tent,
and made him lie down in his own bed. The night watchman instantly fell asleep
and began to snore. P.P.Doctorjee took over his gun and began to patrol.
After 5-6 hours, as dawn
approached, the night watchmen suddenly came awake and found that P.P.Doctorjee
was patrolling. He suddenly remembered what happened, and saw that P.P.Doctorjee,
an elderly man who needed more rest, had given it up for him. Ashamed of
himself, he ran to P.P.Doctorjee and said: " Please go and take some rest.
I am sorry, I slept too long".
Smiling, P.P.Doctorjee
said: "There is no need to be sorry. It is nearly dawn now. Let us go
about with our morning chores, I will help you to pull the tents out and load
them onto the truck".
The night watchman was
amazed at P.P.Doctorjee's simplicity and love. Later, he became a leading
Sangha worker. He often told this story and said: "P.P.Doctorjee's-whole
life was like this. When the entire nation was fast-asleep in
"Moha-Nidra" (delusional sleep), he alone was awake, and was
steadfastly, diligently carrying on with his "Vrata" (sacred vow) of
awakening his motherland."
