When Keshava was barely a
little boy, a newly dug water well in his home backyard was to have an
inaugural Puja (worship). For this, the well needed to be cleansed from the mud
and dirty sediment. No one had cleaned it till the evening of the previous
day, and Keshava, the little boy would certainly not be allowed by the
family elders to clean it in the night.
Keshava quietly talked to
his two elder brothers, and then the three agreed to clean up the well in the night. Since
Keshava was too little to be able to pull the dirt-filled bucket up from the
bottom of the well, he chose to jump into the well, and worked in shoulder deep
water to fill the buckets lowered by his brother with the mud. This work went
on in pitch darkness, till the wee hours of the morning.
Next day, when the family
elders came out to see and decide the course of action, they were dumbfounded
to see a sparkling clean well full of clean water. The "Puja" went
off on schedule!
