As an editor of a newspaper
and an experienced journalist, one day, I flatly told Doctorjee about the futility
of newspaper advertisements to solicit the youth to join the Freedom Movement.
I also said that few people read any newspaper in detail - they mostly glance through the headlines.
With a smile, Doctorjee
added: "This is why we try to keep Sangha away from media publicity as
much as possible!" He was pleased that his thoughts had been vindicated by
a senior, reputed journalist. Only later did I realize how subtly Doctorjee had
gently steered me into agreeing with him. On another occasion, I went to
request the help of swayamsevaks in welcoming Mr. Jamna Das Mehta, then Congress
Chief Minister of Mumbai Presidency. Doctorjee smiled and gently said
"No". With extreme anger, I said: "If we can't use your swayamsevaks
to welcome our own Chief Minister, what good are they? Are you parading them,
simply to disturb our early morning slumber with sound of their marching
boots?".
Doctorjee didn't reply. His
expression was calm, and the slight, polite smile did not waver. After his
return to Nagpur, I even received a short letter from him. It said: "It
was nice to meet you. I have felt great satisfaction by listening to your frank
thoughts, so freely expressed."
