During the early days of
the 1921 Civil Disobedience Movement, Doctorjee was its leading spirit. He was
inspiring young people around Nagpur to actively participate in it. Schools,
colleges, courts and other public offices were all targets of this movement.
Doctorjee was eminently successful in his quest to motivate the youth.
However, in spite of all
his efforts, I began to re-attend my college towards the end of January 1921.
When he came to know about it, Doctorjee asked me in a stern voice: "Are
you still not convinced about our movement?" I felt immensely guilty, and
I left without a word.
Several days later, I began
an apprenticeship in journalism with "Maharashtra" daily newspaper.
Its owner, Mr. Dadasaheb Ogale, was close to Doctorjee. Doctorjee used to visit
the office of the newspaper frequently. I avoided him as best as I could,
fearing that my apprenticeship would be jeopardized, if Doctorjee said unkind
things about me to Mr. Ogale.
However, one day, it so
happened that Doctorjee, Mr. Ogale and I walked into the office at the same
time. But Doctorjee smiled at me, and had very kind words to say about me to
Mr. Ogale. I was very pleasantly surprised. I offered him a thousand pranaams
for having such magnanimity and kindness in his heart.
