Once, P.P.Doctorjee had
occasion to comment on "Saha Bhojana" ("Eating Food together---
various castes of Hindus, especially the so called "untouchables"
sitting together to have lunch or dinner”}. Some politicians encouraged
such annual occasions with great fan fare. Doctorjee said: "We Hindus must
genuinely forget all our differences and quarrels; including those that are
brought about due to castes and untouchability. Every human being must be equally
respected. This is very much in tune with our scriptures, and it is verily the
need of today. Our diversity has to be a basis of mutual love not
discrimination."
However, newspaper
publicity and fanfare are very superficial. A few joint meals will not magically
transform centuries of bad practices, and negative influences. We must
eradicate this negativity at its root, by moral samskara on children and adults
alike, through the Sangha shakha. Only by having infinite patience and love, as
well as a firm resolve, will we begin to root out this severe problem.
