In early 1939, advocate
Babasaheb Padhye, a luminary of that time, was appointed as the Prant
Sanghachalak (province
in -charge) for RSS for the Mahakoshal (today's Madhya Pradesh) province.
Doctorjee hoped that through this appointment,
Shri Padhye, who was relatively new to Sangha, will learn more about it, and
this will help Sangha-growth in the area. To introduce the local workers to
Shri Padhye he arranged an evening meeting for all of them at Shri Padhye's
home.
After the usual
introductions, the discussion began to focus on the local Sangha work. One
senior worker said with a greatly saddened tone: " I think Sangha has
stopped growing since last 5 years. Our attendance has not grown, and we have the
same faces as workers. It is meaningless to carry on work like this. As far as
I am concerned, Sangha work has reached its saturation point here".
This statement depressed
the mood of the entire group. Doctorjee waited for a few moments to see, if anybody would speak up and voice
a different, more positive opinion. But there was only stony silence. Then he
spoke up. "Babasaheb,
it is my duty to tell you the true state of affairs. I want to explain the
attendance, the number of full-time workers (Pracharaks) and the Guru Dakshina
amounts in the last few years. I don't have the exact "Upasthiti"
(attendance) number. But the Guru Dakshina (voluntary sum of money dedicated to
Sangh work by Swayamsevaks, once every year) for 1933 was Rs. 2000; for 1934 it
was Rs. 4,000; for 1935 it was Rs. 4500; in 1936 it was Rs.5000; for 1937 it
was Rs. 5600; in 1938 it was Rs. 6000. If this is not progress what is?
Doctorjee also described the growth in the number of Pracharaks, along with
their names, for each year. He also quoted the growing numbers of Swayamsevaks
attending the Nagpur O.T.C. (Officer Training Camp) year after year. His tone
was humble yet extremely confident. It changed the mood of the meeting
completely, to one of great enthusiasm. The meeting concluded on an extremely positive
note.
Next day, Doctorjee said to
the Swayamsevaks "One of you should have spoken up yesterday. It would
have looked much better. Because all of you clammed up, I was left with no
choice but to speak. Otherwise the whole purpose of the meeting would have been
defeated; and it would have hampered the progress of our work. All of our
programs / activities should be such that they fill up everyone with
enthusiasm, to do more".
