In 1938, Doctorjee was
extremely sick with a very high fever. The physician treating him had strictly
forbidden anybody from even speeking to Doctorjee - so great was Doctorjee's
weakness. Yet, typically, most Swayamsevaks had no idea about this, since
Doctorjee did not like to arouse sympathy for himself.
Soon, the treating
physician realized that it was futile to stop Doctorjee from meeting with
Swayamsevaks who came to see him. The physician tried to keep these meetings
brief, as best as he could.
Completely unaware of the
seriousness of the illness, we (a group of Swayamsevaks) went to meet
Doctorjee. After we reached his room, we suddenly realized that he was in an
extremely serious, critical state. His eyes were shut in a comatose fatigue, he
could barely breath, lying on his back. We decided to quietly just have his
"Darshan" (see him) and close the door silently and to return home.
Accordingly, after seeing him, we quietly said a prayer in our minds and began
to go away.
However, the sound of the
door closing in a barely audible manner nonetheless awoke Doctorjee. He asked
the nurse-in-charge (a swayamsevak): "Did some Swayamsevaks come to see me
just now? Where are they? Why did you not wake me up? Who were they?" The
swayamsevak nurse hesitated to answer. Doctorjee said impatiently: "Please
go and bring them back. They will not have gone too far away. Please go, now?"
The nurse-swayamsevak came
running to us, and we returned to Doctorjee's room. Even though, clearly he was
too far deteriorated, Doctorjee's face broke out into a broad smile when he saw
us. He spoke with us for a few minutes. At the end he said: "I was too
exhausted a few minutes ago. Now that I have seen you, all my fatigue has
totally disappeared." He was smiling when we left.
