110. P.P.Doctorjee Never Hesitated to uphold Truth and Honesty:

In our visit to Nasik city with P.P.Doctorjee, we stayed at Dr.Gayadhani’s home.  We saw that he was an orthodox Brahmin, rigidly following all the rituals and disciplines.  Naturally, I asked; P.P.Doctorjee: “You see, I am not a Brahmin by caste.  The current social custom is that during meals, I should sit segregated, away from all those, who are Brahmins.  Should I do this?”

[It may be noted here that in Sangha no cast differences have ever been recognized.  People from all castes are treated with equal respect. No one bothers to ask another what his or her caste is.  This was totally unlike the general Hindu Society.  Mr. Ninaave got this question due to the above background.]

Shri. Krishnarao Vadekar popped in.  He said: “No one here knows that you are not a Brahmin by caste.  You need not sit segregated from other Brahmins.  Who will know?”

P.P.Doctorjee said:  “Oh, no! Such a behavior would be totally dishonest.  If Dr. Gayadhani is not mentally prepared to accept the Sangha philosophy of non-recognition of castes, he will feel cheated, and he will go away from us.  Therefore, even though it may be very troublesome to us, the Swayamsevaks, we should be up-front, honest and truthful about everything.  For the sake of our work, we should be honest, even if such honesty could cause us mental pain and anguish.  First let us win the heart of Dr. Gayadhani, he will then himself accept our non-segregation.”

[Translator’s Note: P.P.Doctorjee himself sat segregated, with the non-Brahmin Swayamsevaks at the first time food was served.  Dr. Gayadhani being a very perceptive man, immediately sensed what had happened, and he too sat with the segregated Swayamsevaks for food.  This melted the hearts of other orthodox people in his household, and all ate happily together thereafter.]
