In the very beginning, Sangha
did not yet have the institution of "Shri Gurudakshina" . The workers
used to attend the religious and family function (such as marriages) of
Swayamsevaks, and this occasion was used to solicit some donation for Sangha.
On one such
"Upanayana" ceremony, Sangha workers requested the father of a Swayamsevak
for a donation to Sangha. The gentleman asked : "Is your organization
"registered" with the (British) Government?" Doctorjee, who was
nearby, suddenly joined the conversation and said ": "No, we are not
registered with Government. We are registered in the hearts of the
people."
This did not satisfy the
questioner. He said: “ It is difficult to trust the accounting and financial
honesty of non-registered organizations."
Doctorjee, who had foreseen
such comments, had kept meticulous account of Sangha finances, down to the last
penny. He requested a Swayamsevak to bring his accounting books from his home,
which was close by. Upon the receipt of the books, Doctorjee laid them
open in front of the questioner and asked him to examine them. Every
penny had been painstakingly accounted.
