(15) Saint's Magnanimity:

At one point in time, some opponents of Sangha hired a few thugs, promising  Rs.100/- each (a princely sum in the late 1920’s Nagpur) if they beat-up Doctorjee.  He had the habit of walking home alone, in dark and desolate street, well after midnight.  To "case" their prey, the miscreants hid in the corner shadows and watched Doctorjee's habits for a few nights.

Walking erect, as if he was courage personified, Doctorjee calmly and purposefully strode home night after night under the watchful eyes of the miscreants. They felt deep remorse, as they realized, he was a very moral, upright and clean person with an enormous strength of moral character.  Next night, they went to him, bowed humbly by touching his feet and begged his forgiveness, confessing to their plot to beat him up.

Smiling, Doctorjee said, "Why should you poor  people give up your Rs.100/-? Let me come one day without my walking stick.  You guys can then give me a few good hits with stick and stones.  I will then be hospitalized. I won't bear any ill will or complaints against you guys. I will recover quickly and you guys will be richer by Rs.100/- each.  This speech broke the hearts of the miscreants.  They began to sob and weep. Doctorjee hugged them, solaced them and sent them home.
